The Strict "No Stimulant" Policy
Japan has some of the strictest drug laws in the world. Adderall (amphetamine salts) is strictly prohibited in Japan, even if you have a valid prescription from your home country. There are no exceptions for personal use.
CRITICAL WARNING
Attempting to bring Adderall into Japan can result in immediate arrest, detention, and deportation. Do not mail it strict or carry it in your luggage.
What about other ADHD medications?
While Adderall and Vyvanse are banned, Methylphenidate (Ritalin, Concerta) is allowed strict only if you obtain a permission named "Yunyu Kakunin-sho" (Import Confirmation) in advance.
Non-stimulants like Strattera (Atomoxetine) and Intuniv (Guanfacine) are generally easier to Bring but may still require paperwork if you are bringing more than a one-month supply.
How to Travel Safely
- Do not bring forbidden meds: Leave Adderall at home.
- Talk to your doctor: Switch to a legal alternative weeks before you travel.
- Apply for Permission: If bringing Concerta, apply for the Yunyu Kakunin-sho at least 2-3 weeks early.
