Translate OD, BD, SOS: Understanding Dosage Lingo

Context Matters

Medical abbreviations can be confusing because some have double meanings depending on the context (Eye prescription vs Pill dosage).

The Dangerous "OD"

  • In Pill Dosage: OD = Omne Die (Once Daily).
  • In Eye Exams: OD = Oculus Dexter (Right Eye).

Always check if the prescription is for drops or pills!

Timing Codes

  • HS (Hora Somni): At bedtime.
  • Q4H: Every 4 hours.
  • PRN (Pro Re Nata): As needed (similar to SOS).
  • PO (Per Os): By mouth (orally).
