Understanding the lists
The UAE classifies drugs broadly into:
- Narcotic & Psychotropic (Controlled): Requires prior online approval from the Ministry of Health (MOHAP). Examples: Tramadol, Codeine, Alprazolam (Xanax), Ketamine.
- Prescription Only (POM): Requires a valid prescription and original packaging. Examples: Antibiotics, Hormones, stronger painkillers.
- OTC (General): Paracetamol, NSAIDs, Vitamins.
Common "Red List" Items
These absolutely require the electronic permit:
- Tramadol
- Codeine (even in cough syrup)
- Pregabalin (Lyrica)
- Gabapentin
- Benzodiazepines (Valium, Clonazepam)
